London City Airport is the most convenient of all the London airports, and should offer a hassle-free and affordable journey to your destination - even in a taxi. The easiest way to get in to central London is by train.
Train
The Dockland Light Rail (DLR) system on the Woolwich Arsenal Line takes you quickly to to several London Underground stations: westbound to Bank (22 minutes, change to several Tube lines), Canning Town (seven minutes, change to Jubilee Line) and on the Stratford Line to Stratford (17 minutes, change to the Central Line). Eastbound, you can go to Woolwich Arsenal in two stops (seven minutes, change to National Rail services). The airport station is located in Zone 3, and for central London you'll be travelling to Zone 1. Trains run every 8-15 minutes.
Tip: Buy an Oyster top-up card (covering DLR, London Underground and buses), rather than individual tickets, and you'll save money on public transport fares during your stay.
Cost: GBP 4.80 to Zone 1 (or with an Oyster Card: GBP 3.30 peak, GBP 2.80 off-peak to Zone 1)
Buying tickets: Buy tickets/Oyster Card at kiosks in the station or order an Oyster Card online to be delivered to you before you travel: https://oyster.tfl.gov.uk
Location: London City Airport DLR station, to the west of the terminal, well-signposted
Taxi
You'll find official taxis (London black cabs) directly outside the terminal. You can also prebook a mini-cab through the airport's recommended provider, minicabit. These are approximate fares, but be sure to confirm the price with your driver before you leave the airport:
Sample taxi fares: Canary Wharf GBP 12, City of London GBP 25, Piccadilly GBP 40
Sample minicab fares: Canary Wharf GBP 16, City of Londo GBP 25 Piccadilly GBP 30
London City Airport is a small, compact airport, and the only London airport located within the borders of the city. It's used primarily for business flights and is known for its ease of use and the simplicity of getting to your destination within the city. It's only 11km east of the City of London and 5km from Canary Wharf.
It has one terminal on two levels: check-in is on the ground floor, then you'll go up an escalator to your boarding gate. Arrivals is on the first floor.
You'll find more dining and shopping options airside, so it's worth going through security as soon as you get to the airport.
Even though London City airport is a very small airport, it offers a direct connection to New Yorks JFK airport. The flight features the flight number BA1, which was used for the Concorde connection between the two cities. Nowadays it is a small Airbus A318 that is business-class with 32 seats only.
The flight needs to stop in Shannon (Ireland) to refuel. Passengers need to disembark and can pass their US immigration and customs right there arriving in JFK as a domestic flight.
