There aren't so many transport options away from the airport. However, buses go to all the nearby cities and are well-priced.
Bus
The Skylink bus service, run by Kinchbus and Trent Barton, offers regular services to the surrounding cities. Services run daily, every 20 minutes during the day and every hour during the night. There's free Wi-Fi on the buses. Skylink buses go to Leicester (53 minutes) via Loughborough (25 minutes), as well as Derby (40 minutes), Nottingham Broadmarsh (55 minutes, then a five-minute walk to Nottingham Rail Station) and other towns en route.
The Airlink155 bus goes to Coalville (35 minutes) every 60 minutes during the day from Monday to Saturday. You can also take National Express coaches further afield to Sheffield, Leeds and Luton, Heathrow and Gatwick airports.
Tip: If you're travelling to/from East Midlands Airport with your family, ask your Skylink driver for a family ticket with an open return. This ticket permits up to five people, maximum two adults, to travel together to and from the Airport. It is valid for one month. You can also save money by buying a MANGO card.
East Midlands Airport lies in the middle of the UK, 24km south-west of Nottingham, 23km south-east of Derby and 30km north of Leicester. It serves mostly low-cost carriers and there have been some problems with long queues at check-in and security, so make sure you leave enough time to catch your flight. The airport mainly serves Jet2.com, Ryanair, Thomas Cook Airlines and TUI Airways.
It has one terminal, with a decent amount of facilities for a small airport. You'll also find a prayer room, a children's play area on the first floor, and can pay extra for facilities like the Escape Airport Lounge and an Express Lane to get you to your gate quicker. An Aeropark, accessible by bus from the terminal, is a good place to spend some time if you have a few hours at the airport. A mix of aviation museum and viewing platform, it's the perfect distraction for airplane enthusiasts, large and small.
Newcastle Airport has a purpose-built soft play area for young kids. It's conveniently located in the food court on the first floor, where you can keep the kids entertained while you grab a quick bite to eat. The play area is suitable for children up to eight years old.
