Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport (also known as Denpasar Airport) is located near the town of Kuta, 13km south from the capital, Denpasar. It has undergone extensive renovations in the past few years, and is now a modern, airy, more efficient transport hub.
The airport has two terminals: Domestic and International terminals, that share an Arrivals level. Between the two terminals, there's a 'Festival Plaza' with shops and restaurants. The new L-shaped International Terminal, with iconic Balinese-style, wave-shaped roof, has three levels:
Level 1: Arrivals, with five baggage carousels, customs, currency exchange and car hire agencies.
Level 2: Airside Departures, with check-in counters and 14 gates, as well as food, drink and retail stores. There are also 2 internet hotspots.
Level 3: Food, drink, retail shops and offices.
Note: Arriving passengers are separated by visa status. Those needing a visa on arrival will be required to pay USD 35 at customs. Departure taxes are now included in the ticket price.
There are no water fountains after security check.
Taxis and buses are available for getting to and from the airport. We recommend a taxi as a cheap and comfortable option.
Taxis
Prepaid vouchers are available at the airport in Arrivals, with Ngurah Rai Airport Taxi. You take a slip of paper and pay the driver on arrival. Rates, based on distance zones, are fixed and are generally higher than meter rates. Prices are per car, not per person. (If you want to save money and pay by meter, we recommend Blue Bird Taxis. The light-blue taxi fleet has a reputation for honest drivers.)
Beware: Illegal taxi drivers may try and solicit your business outside the Arrivals hall.
Cost: IDR 70,000-90,000 Location: International Terminal, Landside, Arrivals - exit through doors after customs, turn left and the ticketing booth is on your right Opening hours: 08:00-after last flight of the day
Bus
Bus is a much cheaper option, and there is a good connection available. An air-conditioned bus service called Trans Sarbagita runs from Batu Bulan to Nusa Dua.
Cost: IDR 3,500 one-way Location: No marked bus stop at the airport - the bus stops at the roundabout on the left hand side of the airport exit
There is a luggage storage office next to the entrance of the International Departure Terminal. Baggage wrapping, strapping, and locker services are available. The office has two pricing structures: international passengers pay IDR 50,000 (USD 4.20) per locker per day and domestic passengers paying IDR 25,000 (USD 2.10) per locker per day.
Location: International Terminal, landside, ground floor, left-hand corner after entering the check-in/departures area
The Novotel Bali Ngurah Rai Airport is set to open in December 2015. The airport is directly accessible from the Departures Hall. The hotel offers spacious rooms, a gourmet restaurant and a pool and rooftop bar. Free Wi-Fi and business services are available.
There are only a few electrical outlets for charging electronics. Power up before your departure, or head to the cafe after the duty-free area where there are power outlets.
